Generator installation in Omaha

There are two ways to get backup power safely: a portable generator connected through a transfer switch or interlock, or a permanently installed standby generator that starts on its own when the power goes out. Either way the generator must be isolated from the utility lines; a generator plugged straight into a house outlet can send power back down the lines and injure utility workers.

Generators

Signs you may need generator installation

  • Power outages in your area that last hours or days
  • A sump pump, well pump, medical equipment or freezer that can't go without power
  • You own a portable generator but have been running extension cords
  • Someone in the home works from home and needs reliable power
  • You're planning for storms, ice or wildfire-season shutoffs

What affects the price

Every home is different. These are the biggest factors in the price:

  • Portable connection (inlet and interlock or switch) versus a standby generator
  • Generator size, which depends on whether it powers essentials or the whole house
  • Fuel: running a natural gas line, or a propane tank and its supplier
  • Manual, automatic, or load-managing transfer switch
  • Distance from the panel and gas meter to the generator, the pad, and permit fees
